2008 journal prices for all journals now available

We are pleased to announce that the 2008 institutional subscription pricelist for 140 journals handled by Portland Customer Services is now available online.

The new 13 digit ISBN

As of 1 January 2007, all book and book-related products must carry a 13-digit ISBN. All existing 10-digit ISBNs in circulation will be changed to the new 13-digit ISBN that starts with 978. Information about converting existing ISBNs to their new ISBN-13 number is available from www.isbn.org. Portland Customer Services has already converted all existing 10-digit ISBNs to 13-digit ISBNs and is listing both numbers on invoices for all titles it handles for the duration of 2006.

Earthscan sign distribution/hosting agreement with Portland Customer Services

Portland Customer Services is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement to handle journal subscription fulfilment and online journal hosting on behalf of Earthscan. The fulfilment agreement will take effect with the renewal of journal subscriptions for 2007.

Based in London, Earthscan publishes 6 journals and is one of the leading publishers in the field of sustainable development. Portland Customer Services will provide online access to the full text of all six journals starting with Climate Policy in August 2006, and the other journals over the following months.

Portland Customer Services and The Royal Society sign distribution agreement

Portland Customer Services is pleased to announce that it has been appointed to handle journal subscription fulfilment on behalf of The Royal Society. This agreement will take effect with the renewal of journal subscriptions for 2007.

Based in London, The Royal Society is the UK's national academy of science founded in 1660. The Royal Society publishes 7 journals in the life and physical sciences. The Royal Society previously handled journal fulfilment in-house.

Portland Customer Services and Vathek Publishing sign distribution agreement

Portland Customer Services will be handling journal subscription fulfilment on behalf of Vathek publishing with effect from the renewal of journal subscriptions for 2004.

Based in the Isle of Man, Vathek Publishing (http://www.vathek.com) publishes six legal journals. Subscription fulfilment was previously handled by Publisher Services Ltd in the Channel Islands.

Publisher of Vathek Publishing, Mairwen Lloyd-Williams, said, "I am pleased to be able to outsource our journal fulfilment to a company that has a similar philosophy to our own. As a relatively small publisher outsourcing services like fulfilment allows us to concentrate on the core business of publishing high-quality journals."


PORTLAND CUSTOMER SERVICES ACHIEVES COUNTER COMPLIANCE

Portland Customer Services recently announced the availability of Usage Statistics for institutional subscribers to client journals online, and is now pleased to announce that the reports conform to the COUNTER level 2 code of practice, and is the first publisher to provide journal report 3.

The reports supplied by PCS (journal report 3) conform to the COUNTER level 2 code of practice and show the number of downloads of tables of contents, abstracts, references lists and full text html and pdf files. The reports will display this data for all PCS hosted journals that an institution subscribes to and can be downloaded in .csv format for ease of use.

This latest new development will benefit institutions greatly allowing them to monitor the use and value of the journals they subscribe to by type and volume of downloads. COUNTER compliance ensures that the usage of online information products and services can be measured in a credible, consistent and compatible way enabling librarians to compare statistics from different vendors, to make better-informed purchasing decisions, and to plan infrastructure more effectively.

Distribution of Multilingual Matters' journals
Portland Customer Services is the new distributor of journals published by Multilingual Matters/Channel View Publications. This agreement will take effect with the renewal of journal subscriptions for 2004.

Based in Clevedon, near Bristol, Multilingual Matters publishes 12 journals in the field of linguistics, and another 6 journals on tourism studies under the Channel View Publications imprint. Multilingual Matters/Channel View Publications previously handled fulfilment themselves.

Managing Director of Multilingual Matters/Channel View Publications, Mike Grover, said, "We are delighted to be able to outsource our journal fulfilment and distribution to a company that has a similar philosophy to our own. This decision will free up our staff to spend more time on improving our journals and expanding our extensive book and journal publishing program under both imprints."


Special announcement for subscribers who use divine/RoweCom Inc.
Further to the recent announcements that divine Inc. will no longer support the subscription aggregation business, please note the following.

All subscriptions to any of the journals handled by Portland Customer Services that were paid through any of the divine/RoweCom Inc. companies for 2002 will be continued until 1 March 2003 while the situation concerning payment is resolved.

If you did subscribe to any of the journals listed through divine/RoweCom Inc. in 2002, please contact us, quoting our Customer Reference Number from the journal label carrier if possible. We need to know if you have already renewed for 2003 via divine/RoweCom, if you have or plan to renew through another agent, or if you have canceled the subscription for 2003.

Portland Press Online Access
The online archive for all Portland Press journals is free to anyone with internet access. Every year in January, the online content for all the previous years will become free. Full access to the current year of the online journal is restricted to institutions that have a subscription.

As a result of this policy, there is no grace period for the online version of Portland Press journals. Access to the online journals will end on 31 December, so ensure that your renewal instructions have been sent before this date to ensure continuity of client subscriptions.

Change of distributor for 2006

Renewals and new subscription orders for the journals Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons and Bulletin of Medical Ethics should now be sent to Portland Customer Services. These journals were previously fulfilled by RSM Press.

Portland Customer Services is pleased to announce that it has won the contract to handle journal subscription fulfilment on behalf of Royal Society of Medicine Press . This agreement will take effect with the renewal of journal subscriptions for 2006.

Based in London, RSM Press is the publishing arm of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), a long-established postgraduate medical society with a multi-disciplinary and multi-professional membership. RSM Press publishes books and some 20 journals for medical and other healthcare professionals. RSM Press previously handled journal fulfilment in-house.

Biochemical Journal Public Access Policy

At the 111th annual meeting of the full Editorial Board of the Biochemical Journal on 18 March 2005, it was announced that papers accepted for publication in the Biochemical Journal will be deposited automatically in PubMed Central (PMC), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature, 6 months after the publication date of the issue.

Authors will not have to expend additional time and effort on the deposition process themselves. The authentic, final copy-edited version of Authors' articles will be placed in PubMed Central without the need for further work from them.

Multilingual Matters and Channel View Publications move online journals to Portland Customer Services

From 1st January 2005 the 19 journals published by MLM and CVP will be hosted by Portland Customer Services. If you already subscribe to these journals please make sure you update your systems to include the new URLs for the journals.

Free online trial period

To smooth the transition period and make sure that as many readers as possible can access the journals online MLM/CVP are offering a FREE online trial period for ALL journals to 31st March 2005. This free trial is available to all and will allow subscribers time to register their IP address and enable library users to review other journals published by Multilingual Matters and Channel View Publications.

New Partnership with Portland Customer Services for Membership Services

The Council of the International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) has approved an agreement with Portland Customer Services (PCS) to provide management services for membership dues collection and journal subscriptions. This move is being made in order to improve the way that the ISN Officers are able to serve the membership. Practically speaking this means that in future renewals for ISN membership will be carried out by PCS on behalf of ISN.

The ISN aims to facilitate the worldwide advance of neurochemistry and related neuroscience disciplines and to foster the education and development of neurochemists, particularly or young and emerging investigators.


NEW Journal from Portland Press - Biology of the Cell

Portland Press Limited is pleased to announce that from 1 January 2005 it will publish Biology of the Cell on behalf of its joint owners: the Société Française des Microscopies and the Société de Biologie Cellulaire de France.

Biology of the Cell publishes articles of original research on all aspects of cellular and molecular biology and cell physiology that make a significant contribution to our further understanding of the mechanistic relationships that govern cellular functions.

The frequency of Biology of the Cell will increase from 9 to 12 issues in 2005 and with a change to the layout will provide an improved service to authors and readers, and better value to subscribers. The institutional subscription price for the journal for 2005 will remain the same as in 2004, and will be for a combined print and online subscription.
